The experience of a Dodge intern (not a coffee runner)

By Ashlea Cartee on September 15th, 2016

Goodbye summer, hello fall! Each summer, we bring a few interns on board, who have the opportunity to become full-time coordinators within just a few months. Enjoy reading these experiences of our recent interns, now full-time employees.

"Excited, anxious, nervous, unsure, open. These are all feelings I experienced leading up to my college graduation from the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!). While my time as a Georgia Bulldog was incredible, I felt prepared and excited for the next phase in my life. So toward the end of my final year, when I was offered a 3-month internship at Dodge Communications, I accepted without hesitation. Although I wasn’t sure what to expect, I soon realized it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Fast forward 3 months and I’m an official, full-time employee at Dodge – with my own business cards and everything! What I enjoyed most about my time as an intern was the fact that I wasn’t going on coffee runs or making copies; I was thrown into the fire right out of the gate. I felt equal, I felt trusted and I felt like I was making a difference. I enjoyed the constant “mental stimulation” (as Brad Dodge says) and always having to think proactively, creatively and intuitively.

I began my full-time position as an Account Coordinator on September 1, and the transition has been seamless. That isn’t because this is an easy job (it’s definitely challenging), it’s because I was already so immersed in the clients and the company culture that there was no need for a big transition into my new role. I’ve learned so much from my colleagues, who are both incredibly intelligent and hilarious, and I’m excited to continue learning and growing with them."

"I started my internship at Dodge Communications just over three months ago. It was my first internship after college and I was so excited to be entering the real world. The first few weeks of my internship were a whirlwind of learning all about the different systems at Dodge and what I was going to learn as an intern. When I first started, I was nervous about having to learn all about the healthcare industry, but Dodge did a great job of answering my questions. They also knew that it would take a while to learn about the industry, and made sure I was prepared with the best resources to research healthcare.

From the beginning of my internship, I felt that I was trained very well about what was expected from an account coordinator. Weekly check-in meetings with my advisor helped me stay on track and gave me the ability to make sure that all of my questions were answered. I had a meeting with two mentors near the end of my internship and they covered their jobs as account coordinators and what their day to day tasks looked like. It was very insightful to be able to hear what they do every day and how it was similar to my intern tasks. I think the flow from an intern to an account coordinator was very easy because of how well Dodge set up their internship program."
